Mastwood manages 50 acres of tree crops across the Rondout Valley using agroforestry designs that integrate trees and shrubs into farming systems, creating multi-layered, productive landscapes that mimic our native ecosystem. The trees crops we grow include; Chestnut, Hickory, Hazelnut, Oak, Persimmon, Mulberry, Elderberry, Aronia and Plum. Interplanted between tree crops we grow native shrubs and willows for woody cut bouquets and basketry.
Home farm
Our home farm sits in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains, overlooking the Shawangunk Ridge in Kerhonkson, NY, under a long-term lease with the landowner who shares our commitment to ecological restoration and has put the land into agricultural conservation easement to protect it from ever being developed. The site was once a dairy pasture, grazed for generations until the soil compacted into a dense hardpan. Underneath lies a mix of clay and silt, remnants of the glacial lake that once filled this valley. That legacy of overgrazing, combined with water erosion off the mountain, left the field increasingly unmanageable, and over the past few decades the hay production on the hilltop declined while the rest of it grew into a stand of ash that all died and became unmanageable.
Through a handful of grants, we're regenerating this old pasture into a highly diverse silvopasture orchard. Rehabilitation began with a winter of cutting and forestry mulching to clear the dead ash trees and non-native plants that had overtaken much of the field, while preserving the native trees worth keeping. The site is laid out on contour, with swales and a pond designed to slow, spread, and infiltrate water across the land.
Tree crops include chestnut, hazelnut, hickory, oak, elderberry, plum, aronia, and mulberry.
ELDER ORCHARD
We manage a mature chestnut orchard in Accord, NY where we pick 400lbs+ each year from 15 trees. We also have expanded this orchard with additional tree plantings. Managing this orchard has made it possible for us to start distributing chestnuts our first year and has been a powerful reminder of how legacy trees can create opportunity and sustenance for future generations.
Tree crops include chestnut.
RIPARIAN BUFFET
We planted and now manage a 4 acre riparian buffer pilot project along a stream that runs through a historic hay field in Kerhonkson, NY. This project is modeling a systems farmers can use to protect their adjacent waterways while growing a diverse array of native trees that are low maintenance.
Tree crops include planting includes hickory, chestnut, persimmon, plum and elderberry.
HICKORY OIL BUFFER
We planted and now manage a 5 acre Yellowbud Hickory riparian buffer on the Rondout Creek (Kahaksink in Lenape) in Accord, NY. This project is trying to model a way farmers can protect their adjacent waterways while growing a native tree that can be harvested to bed pressed for Hickory Oil. This planting is 50% Yellowbud Hickory and 50% native support trees/shrubs. This project is part of our Rondout Creek Watershed Alliance work to help plant more buffers in our valley to increase the health of our watershed.
Tree crops include Yellowbud Hickory and an array of native support trees like redbud.
